Blackfriars Restaurant lends itself to both intimate and romantic dining, as well as larger dinner parties. The dining room is split into two levels, both seating up to 30 diners. Small inglenooks and corners enable diners to tuck themselves away for a private meal whilst the lower level can accommodate large party tables.

Most diners arrive early for a cocktail or aperitif in our cosy bar before eating inside or outside where the horseshoe of medieval buildings surrounds a sunny but sheltered terrace for al fresco drinking and dining throughout the summer months.

About Blackfriars
With its origins dating back to 1239, Blackfriars Restaurant is the oldest purpose-built restaurant in the UK with the main restaurant originally built to house the refectory for the ‘Black Friars’. The horseshoe of buildings, which also house a number of craft shops, provides shelter for the medieval courtyard which is used for al fresco dining in the summer.

Today Blackfriars Restaurant is one of the most recognised restaurants in Newcastle. Blackfriars was recently the Metro Newspaper’s ‘Restaurant of the Year’ for Newcastle and with an AA rosette, inclusion in the Which? Good Food Guide and Michelin Guide, it stands amongst the best places to eat in the North East.

The food is predominantly modern-British using classic French techniques and using fresh, local and seasonal produce – often direct from the farm. The menus range from an informal lunchtime café menu to a full a la carte menu during the evening. The wine list is ranked as one of the 20 best wine lists in the UK (by Restaurant magazine) with a balance of old and new world wines and an emphasis on food-friendly varietals.
